Client D required a solution for filtering industrial water with a specific challenge which involved not only removing impurities but also separating oil from water. Their traditional oil-removal filters, made from glass fiber in pleated or wound forms, used a demulsification layer to break down emulsions. This process allowed water containing oil to pass through the filter, where larger oil droplets were formed and separated by gravity. However, this method had several disadvantages. Its reliance on gravity for separating large oil droplets was inefficient, particularly when dealing with fine oil particles, which significantly reduced the overall filtration performance.
Our technical team conducted a detailed review of the client’s filtration process and identified key areas for improvement. After discussions with client D, we developed a customized oil-removal filter cartridge designed to address their specific challenges. The new filter uses a specially treated material that repels oil while allowing water to pass through. This material is tightly wound around a sturdy inner core. As the oily water flows from the outside to the inside of the filter, the oil is trapped on the outer surface, where it gradually forms larger droplets. These droplets then naturally separate from the water due to gravity, resulting in a more efficient filtration process.
To ensure durability, the filter’s end caps are fused together using heat instead of adhesives. This design provides a stronger and more reliable seal, reducing the risk of leaks or failures over time. The filter is built to withstand tough operating conditions, offering a longer service life and maintaining the stability of the filtration system even in demanding environments.
To address the client’s specific challenges, Pullner conducted a comprehensive evaluation, starting with operational data and specific filtration requirements. In our lab, we ran a series of tests to assess key performance metrics, including pore size distribution, air permeability, flow rate, filtration efficiency, pressure drop, and material compatibility. These tests guided our selection of a composite fiber material that could handle the client’s demanding conditions.
We meticulously designed the filter’s critical features, such as pore size, filtration area, and porosity, to enhance both efficiency and durability. Once sample cartridges were produced, they underwent rigorous inspections for both appearance and performance. The results demonstrated that the filters not only met but exceeded client expectations, ensuring they aligned with industry standards for reliability and efficiency.
Clients have consistently reported positive outcomes with the oil-blocking filter cartridges we developed. The innovative multilayer design efficiently captures fine oil droplets while maintaining strong flow rates, significantly extending the lifespan of the filters. This reduction in maintenance frequency has helped clients lower operational costs and minimize downtime.
